My Projects: Stop Shop

Here is the storyboard for Stop Shop. The images represent the lyrics a bit like the you're my flame video. I think it is important to stylise all the images to sustain interest and have made an animatic of the storyboard.

My Projects: Harder Better Faster Stronger

This is a project for the music video for Harder Better Faster Stronger by Daft Punk. The current video is manga-ish from their DVD. I like this song for its clear beats that can be simply interpreted.

This storyboard indicates directly what will happen at each timing point. This is a great resource for me throughout the project. The colours highlight what image will be seen at which point.

This is one storyboard of how the video may look its also a resource that is more understandable by others than the first board.

Following are the images in high quality from the animation

Using Photography to construct the image

When I animate I am conscious that I cant draw it all. I did that with the YCN brief and although I didn't hate the final product I feel that the element that was strongest visually was the photographed figure. I am now more aware of constructing each image.

I like to photograph my source typically and am therefore interesting in photography itself and find that lighting is very important. I would like to create an animation where I use photography and set design to construct each scene. Here are a couple of styled photography sets from city magazine that illustrate how I could construct my images, something I may use for the stop shop project.

Others Storyboards

Having looked at a lot of other storyboards of succesful film makers it eased my worries in having to have them fully worked up. Above is one for Human Beahaviour by Michel Gondry, his film turn out alright!!

The escape artist by sage francis animated by ramon and pedro was pitched with more text that images.

stumble upon

I like to look at resources on the internet, these are sourced and blogged at http://clairesuckling.stumbleupon.com/

I like the ease of clicking a button to say I like something that is only situated in my toolbar. I like that others can see what I like. I like that I can return to it in blog form and realise how relevant it is at a later date.

Visual timing: My Inspiration (case study Michel Gondry)

One thing that really grabs my attention in moving image is seeing the timing, especially in music videos, where the music corresponds directly to the image. Whether this be tightly choreographed dancing or flashing lights. My enjoyment seems to build as I see the musics number of levels interpreted visually e.g. Around the World by Michel Gondry shows 4 sets of characters each choreographed to a different beat in the music.

In fact Michel is pretty good at this and also displays this in the hardest button to button. The drums move as the music would:

"From MTV News, Gondry: "When I heard the song, it was so incredible, I knew I had to do the video. It's the shape of the song that gave me the idea. The pattern, how it goes 'doot-doot-doot[-doot], doot, doot, doot, doot, doot.' This makes me think of 1, 2, 3, 4 ... 4, 8, 12, 16 ... 2, 4, 8, 16, 32." Thus, when Meg hits a beat her drum kit multiplies, and when Jack plays a lick his amplifier multiplies."

Another good video for this are you're my flame by zero 7 unfortunately the video isnt online anymore. The shapes in the background represent the music while the rotoscoped images illustrate exactly what the music is saying.

I am currently working on a project of my own with this theme. Im trying to gain the same rhythmic visual with my work and I bear these existing videos in mind as I work.

Creating an idea in different forms

I've always like the idea of creating a set of ideas. Here Michel Gondry has displayed, in an exhibition, the sculpture that was sometimes was used in the film or sometimes displaying the ideas, in focus from the film (ike the statue of Stephan with big hands)
http://www.deitch.com/projects/project_images.php?slideShowId=292&projId=195

In my work I would like to create the packaging for each animation or moving image project. Although this is more commercial paraphernalia than that displayed by Gondry I think that this is a representation of how I'd like my animation to become more tangible. I like to have a still/ poster or packaging aspect to my work as I realise sometimes that people who aren't interested in animation don't have time for it but it takes hardly any time at all for someone to be intrigued or seduced by a single image.

My Typography

Above: my ink alphabet march 2007

Typography has alway inspired my work and I think it is completely intergrated with moving image. My previous work has included creating typography for print but now I have used it in animation and would like to strip it down further and create and animation with typography as the main focus.

above: bbc animation with typography I created by cutting up a word and animating it backwards

above: this is the type of thing I would like to look at creating maybe with illustration where apropriate

My Storyboards

Above: first storyboard to be part of a final project. This was created as part of the YCN brief I did last year for an project I finished with this a part of it.

Ive always liked making storyboards, I like to plan and see this as the perfect way to. I didn't ever think of it as anything other than a plan as I feel my drawing skills aren't good enough to warrant it as anything else.

This has changed this year, above is a storyboard I created at the start of the year that I felt was effective enough and as a result didnt want to create the animation in the end. I appreciate how storyboard as worked up as this could translate directly to the finished product by just editing these images together but storyboarding has always been a plan for me. I was too precious with this storyboard and it didnt serve the needs I wanted it to. I like a storyboard to basically outline what will happen rather than wha it will look like. I like to see what needs to happen in what order and then enhance the story visually during the creation process that is sometime experimental and therefore I cannot know before-hand exactly how it will look. A good example of this is the walk through the city in the YCN animation that was a simple part of the plot enhanced by me illustrating a revolving city.
